Booking a DVA dental appointment should be straightforward, but if it’s your first time using your Veteran Card at a dentist, the process can be quite confusing.

Which dentists accept DVA?

Do you need pre-approval before turning up?

What do you bring to the appointment?

Will you be charged anything on the day?

These are just some of the questions you may have thought about.

This guide walks you through it from start to finish, including what to do before you call, what happens at the appointment, and what to expect afterwards.

We treat DVA Gold Card and White Card patients every week at Good Smile Dental in Windsor, so the steps below are the same ones we walk our own veteran patients through.

Step 1: Confirm Which Veteran Card You Hold

The first thing to sort out is which DVA card you have, because what’s covered depends entirely on it.

  • DVA Gold Card — gives access to clinically necessary dental treatment for all health conditions, whether or not they are service-related. This type of card is the broader of the two, which covers a wide range of dental care, plus other health services beyond dentistry (more on that shortly).
  • DVA White Card — covers dental treatment only for the specific accepted service-related conditions listed on your card.

The simplest way to think about DVA White Card vs Gold Card is scope: Gold Card is broad and general, White Card is condition-specific. If you’re unsure which you hold or what’s listed on your White Card, DVA on 1800 838 372 can clarify before you book.

Step 2: Find a DVA-Registered Dentist

Not every dental clinic in Australia is set up to bill DVA directly. To use your card without paying out of pocket, you will have to book with a DVA-registered dental provider. These clinics have agreed to bill within the DVA dental schedule and handle the claim with Services Australia on your behalf.

Ways to find DVA dental providers:

  • Call clinics in your area and ask whether they’re registered with DVA.
  • Check a clinic’s payment options or accepted cards page on their website.
  • Phone DVA Provider Services on 1800 550 457 for help locating a registered provider.

At Good Smile Dental in Windsor, we welcome both DVA Gold Card and White Card holders. Veterans regularly come to us from Richmond, McGraths Hill, South Windsor, Bligh Park, and the wider Hawkesbury area.

Step 3: Call to Book Your Appointment

Once you’ve found a registered provider, the actual booking is just a phone call (or online if the clinic offers it). When you call, it helps to:

  1. Mention you’re a DVA patient and confirm which card you hold.
  2. For White Card holders, briefly describe the dental concern and which accepted condition it relates to.
  3. Ask whether prior approval might be needed. Some items in the DVA dental fee schedule, including dental implants, treatment under general anaesthetic, and several Schedule B and C items, need to be approved before treatment begins.
  4. Book in. The clinic will let you know if anything else is needed before your visit.

If your situation is urgent, like when you feel pain, swelling, or a broken tooth, say so when you call. Most clinics will try to fit veterans in sooner, where they can.

Step 4: Know What’s Covered (and What Needs Pre-Approval)

Before your appointment, it’s helpful to have a rough idea of what the DVA dental program covers.

Does DVA Gold Card cover dental? Does DVA White Card cover dental?

Both can cover a range of clinically necessary treatments, including:

  • Exams, X-rays, scale and cleans, and preventive care
  • Fillings and other restorative work
  • Root canal treatment
  • Tooth extractions
  • Gum disease treatment
  • Crowns, bridges, and dentures (often with prior approval)
  • Emergency dental treatment

DVA dental implants are also possible, but they require prior approval under DVA’s specific Osseo-integrated Dental Implant Policy and Guidelines. Cosmetic-only treatment, like teeth whitening for appearance reasons, is not part of the program.

Your dentist will handle prior approval forms on your behalf for items that need them, so you don’t need to chase paperwork yourself.

Step 5: What to Bring to Your DVA Dental Appointment

A short checklist for the day:

  • Your DVA Veteran Card (Gold or White)
  • A second form of photo ID, just in case
  • Any DVA correspondence about accepted conditions (White Card holders, especially)
  • A list of any current medications, including blood thinners or bisphosphonates
  • Any previous X-rays or treatment summaries, if you’re transferring from another clinic

If it’s your first dental visit in a while, our short guide on planning your dental visit walks through what to expect more generally.

Step 6: At the Appointment

At your first visit, your dentist will usually start with an exam, take X-rays if needed, and work out a treatment plan. They will explain what’s covered under the DVA dental schedule, what (if anything) needs prior approval, and what the timeline looks like.

For routine items (Schedule A), treatment can often begin the same day. For items that need approval, your dentist will submit the relevant request to DVA, and you will get a call back once approval comes through.

Either way, you should not be asked to pay out of pocket for items within DVA dental fees.

Book Your Dental Checkup as a Veteran in the Hawkesbury

Booking your first DVA dental appointment doesn’t need to be complicated. You will just have to confirm your card, find a DVA-registered provider, call to book, bring your card on the day, and let your dentist handle the rest. Most veteran patients are surprised at how straightforward it is once they have done it once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to book a DVA dental appointment?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with any DVA-registered dental clinic. If your treatment needs prior approval, the dentist arranges that with DVA on your behalf.

Can I use my DVA card at any dentist?

Only at clinics registered as DVA dental providers. It’s worth confirming this when you book, especially for higher-cost treatment.

For patients in Hawkesbury, Good Smile Dental can help you look after your teeth with the help of your DVA cards.

Is there a limit on how often I can see the dentist?

Routine check-ups are typically funded once every six months. Other items in the DVA dental schedule have their own frequency or quantity limits, which your dentist can explain.

Do I need to bring cash or a card to my appointment?

For treatment covered by the DVA dental schedule, you generally don’t pay anything out of pocket. If anything sits outside the DVA cover, your dentist will let you know in advance.

Can I switch dentists if I’m already a DVA patient elsewhere?

Yes, you’re free to choose your DVA dental provider. It can be helpful to bring previous X-rays or treatment notes so your new dentist has the full picture.

Does DVA cover dental implants?

Yes, but every implant treatment requires prior approval and must meet DVA’s clinical criteria. Cosmetic-only implants are not funded.

What if I’m a war widow, widower or dependent?

Eligible war widows, widowers, and certain dependents may also hold a Gold Card with similar dental entitlements. Your card itself confirms eligibility.
