Thinking about veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front surface of teeth. They are one option patients ask about when teeth are chipped, worn, discoloured, uneven or slightly gapped.

Veneers are not suitable for everyone, and preparing a tooth for a veneer is usually irreversible.

At Good Smile Dental our dentists examine your teeth, gums and bite first, explain the alternatives, and set out the risks, benefits and costs in writing so you can decide what is right for you.

What does porcelain veneer treatment at Good Smile Dental include?

Every veneer case is planned individually. A typical course of treatment involves:

Consultation and assessment: an examination of your teeth, gums and bite, photographs and any radiographs required, and a conversation about what you would like to change.

Options and informed consent: we explain the alternatives — including whitening, composite bonding, crowns or orthodontic treatment — along with the risks, limitations and expected number of visits, plus a written itemised quote.

Fitting and review: fit, shade and bite are checked before bonding, followed by a review appointment and written care instructions for maintaining your veneers.

Veneers sit within cosmetic dentistry, but they are still a clinical treatment. Before any veneer is planned, our dentists check that the underlying teeth and gums are healthy — decay, gum disease, heavy grinding or an unstable bite are addressed first, because a veneer bonded to a compromised tooth is unlikely to last. If your main concern is tooth colour alone, whitening may achieve a change without removing enamel; if teeth are crowded or rotated, orthodontic treatment such as clear aligners may be a more conservative option. We will tell you honestly when a simpler treatment is likely to meet your goals.

As with all dental treatment, veneers carry risks. These can include tooth sensitivity after preparation, the possibility that a tooth later requires root canal treatment, chipping or debonding of a veneer, staining at the margins, and differences in colour between porcelain and adjacent natural teeth over time. Porcelain does not respond to whitening products. Veneers require ongoing maintenance and will need replacement at some point. Outcomes differ from person
to person, and no result can be guaranteed.

Cost depends on the number of teeth involved, the condition of those teeth and the laboratory work required, so we provide an itemised written quote after your assessment rather than a headline price. Health fund rebates vary by policy and level of cover — we can process claims on the spot via HICAPS. Interest-free payment plans are available for eligible patients on approved treatment plans. Approved applicants only. Terms, conditions, fees and charges apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are porcelain veneers reversible?

In most cases, no. Preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer usually involves removing a thin layer of enamel, and enamel does not grow back. Once a tooth has been prepared it will generally need a veneer or crown from then on. Some conservative or ‘no-prep’ cases involve little or no enamel removal, but suitability for these is limited and is assessed individually. Because the decision is long-term, our dentists will discuss reversible alternatives with you before recommending veneers.

Longevity varies considerably between patients. Published clinical studies report a wide range of survival rates for bonded porcelain restorations, and results depend on oral hygiene, gum health, bite forces, grinding or clenching habits, diet and how well the veneers are maintained. Veneers should be regarded as a restoration that will eventually need repair or replacement, not a permanent fix. We cannot predict how long an individual patient’s veneers will last.

Shade, shape and translucency are selected with you during planning, and the veneers are made by a dental laboratory to that prescription. We check fit, shade and bite before bonding. Appearance is subjective and depends on your starting point — the position of your teeth, gum levels, the colour of adjacent natural teeth and your bite all influence what is achievable. Your dentist will explain what is realistic in your case before treatment starts.

Cost depends on how many teeth are involved, the condition of those teeth, whether any preparatory treatment is needed and the laboratory work required. For that reason we provide a written, itemised quote after your assessment rather than an advertised price. Health fund rebates depend on your policy and level of cover. Interest-free payment plans are available to eligible patients on approved treatment plans — approved applicants only, terms, conditions, fees and charges apply.

Depending on your concern, alternatives may include professional teeth whitening for discolouration, composite bonding for small chips or gaps, crowns where a tooth is heavily broken down, orthodontic treatment such as clear aligners for crowding or spacing, or simply doing nothing. Each option has different costs, risks and longevity. We will go through the alternatives that apply to your situation so you can give informed consent.

Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, and keep up regular check-ups and professional cleans. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens or fingernails, and tell your dentist if you grind or clench — a night guard is often recommended to protect the porcelain. Porcelain does not respond to whitening products, so we will discuss the sequencing of whitening and veneers during planning.
